How to Reset the TPMS Light

Tire Pressure Warning Light_216248072

Your TPMS light may pop up when you start your car or while you’re driving in Muscle Shoals. Usually this happens due to the following reasons:

  • Significant changes in weather or temperature: When the temperature drops, so can your tire pressure.
  • A leak in one or more tires: If no sudden weather changes have occurred, lost tire pressure may be due to a leak.

Is your tire pressure light still illuminated even after you’ve inflated your tires? If this is the case, you may have to reset the TPMS light. Your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is an important safety feature of your vehicle, so you want to make sure it is operating properly at all times. Wondering how to reset a TPMS? Greenway Toyota of the Shoals has provided the steps below.

How to Reset TPMS: Troubleshooting the Issue

Normally, once you inflate your tires to the correct level, the tire pressure light should automatically shut off. If it is still illuminated, the steps below should solve the problem:

  • Drive at or above 50 mph for 10 minutes to reset the sensor. The next time you turn on the vehicle, the light should go off.
  • With the vehicle off, do not start the car, but turn the key to the “On” position. Hold the TPMS reset button until the tire pressure light blinks three times, then let go of the button. Start the car, and within 20 minutes the sensor should refresh. In most vehicles, you can find the tire pressure monitor reset button beneath the steering wheel. If you are unsure of its location, you can find this information in your owner’s manual.
  • Inflate all tires to 3 PSI over their recommended amount, then deflate them completely. Do not forget your spare tire because it may also be equipped with a sensor. Reinflate all tires to the proper level.
  • When the vehicle is off, disconnect the positive battery cable with a wrench. Turn the car on and honk the horn for approximately three seconds. This will help to drain any remaining power. Reconnect the battery.

What Does a Flashing TPMS Light Mean?

Tire pressure sensors often use a battery. A flashing TPMS light could indicate that it is time for the battery to be replaced. If that is not the culprit, it may be an issue with one of the sensors. The service center at Greenway Toyota of the Shoals can help to diagnose the problem. Set up an appointment today.
